In 2010, the Somerville Garden Club published a small brochure entitled: The History of Urban Agriculture in Somerville. Fortunately, Sullivan and Blewett, two of the contributors to that booklet, have agreed to share their recent research into this subject with the larger community. From a population of 1,013 in 1842, when Somerville became a town until today, with a population of over 78,000, the landscape and agricultural practices of Somerville have changed rapidly. With new visuals to add to the subject, this will be a not-to-be-missed lecture of interest to all.
Vilma F. Sullivan and Dyan R. Blewett are certified Principal Master Gardeners with the Massachusetts Master Gardening Association. Both have served on the board of the Somerville Garden Club for many years and work with other Somerville Green groups. They are working on planting Milk Row cemetery with historically-accurate plantings. Both are avid gardeners in their flower/vegetable gardens in Somerville.
