Join Historic Somerville in 2013 for our Historic Lecture Series and Events. All lectures will be held at the Somerville Museum, One Westwood Rd, Somerville, MA 02143 except where noted. Nonmembers admission: $8; Members are free. Contact info@historicsomerville.org for confirmation of dates and times prior to the event.
Note that meetings of Historic Somerville are generally held on the first Thursday of the month between 7:30 and 9:00PM at the Somerville Museum. There are no meetings in July and August. You do not have to be a member to attend. All are welcome!


2013 HS Local History Lecture Series The Mystic River: A Natural and Human History March 24th, Sunday, 2:00-3:00PM, reception to follow. The waterways and communities along the Mystic River are full of history and surprising facts, important natural resources, and under-utilized recreation resources. Prof. Richard Beinecke’s talk will give an overview of this rich subject with special emphasis on the waterways adjacent to Somerville. The Somerville I Didn’t Know: the Influence of Africans, West Indians, and African Americans on Somerville, 1630-1860. June 9th, 2:30-3:30PM with reception to follow. Alice Mack, poet and historyteller, will present this discussion of early African American history relative to Somerville. Kathleen Wolcott, historian and member of the Cambridge African American Heritage Trail will give a brief introduction. The House Beautiful Movement in Somerville, Sunday, September 22nd, 2:00-3:00PM with reception to follow. Lecture using new research on the house beautiful movement by local historian and author, Dee Morris The Agrarian History of Somerville Sunday, October 6th, 2:00-3:00 PM with reception to follow. Master Gardeners Vilma Sullivan & Dyan Blewett will present a history of Somerville and Charlestown that we only glimpse now and then - the history of farming, farms, and the natural flora of Somerville. Struggles Unceasing: the POW Experience of the Somerville Guard, 1864-65 Sunday, November 10th, 2:00-3:00 PM to be followed by a short ceremonial wreath laying at the 1863 Civil War Monument in Milk Row Cemetery at 4PM. Professor Daniel Breen continues to follow the history of the Somerville Guard during the Civil War in this third of a four part series to commemorate the sesquicentennial of the war. |
